Karakia Kids

We have been learning the school karakia with Whaea Saf. These brave and clever kids got up in front of the class and recited the karakia from memory. There were a couple of others who did it too. They all got a special taonga from Whaea Saf.

Whizz Kids!

This morning we had a prizegiving ceremony for the kids who had made the most improvement on Maths Whizz!

We made the rules that we would not go on Maths Whizz at home, but that we would try to spend 15 minutes of school time on it each school day.

Here are the Whizz kids from week 3:

Introducing Miss Nalder

My name is Miss Nalder and I am the teacher in Class 13. I am 29 years old (very nearly 30!) and I only moved to Auckland one year ago. Before that, I lived in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Australia.
I have a husband called Jono and two cats called Fidel and Che.
I am really looking forward to an excellent, exciting year with Class 13!

Wicked Sentences

This week we have been talking about writing interesting sentences. Our sentences needed to make sense, have correct punctuation, and have some interesting detail.

Here are a few of them:

There is a dark black chimpanzee waiting in a tall tree staring at some shiny yellow bananas.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school I love to go home because there is always a really big chocolate strawberry cake waiting to be eaten.

Beneath the tree there is a ripe banana waiting to be eaten.

When I get home, I go into the cupboard and sneak some cake!

There is a monkey on a tree. He is gazing at a delicious enormous banana next door, but he can't reach it and he feels sorry for himself.

On top of the desk is a Chromebook waiting to be used.

The Chromebook is on top of the desk waiting for a child to play on it.

When Paige finishes playing wiht her netbook she puts it in the middle of the desk so it won't fall down from the table.

There is a lazy monkey sitting in a tree waiting for the lovely yellow banana.

Student Netbook Agreement

This morning we had a visit from the super clever, Chromebook expert, Miss Ouano. She taught us how to make a Google drawing. We each made a slide to go together to show the Student Netbook Agreement that we signed last week.

Waitangi Day

A long time ago there was a huge argument between the Pakeha and the Maori about the land of Aotearoa. On August 25th 1839, Captain William Hobson travelled for four months from England all the way to Australia, then he travelled a little bit longer all the way to New Zealand. He was sent by the Queen to write a treaty to share the land of New Zealand.

But he wrote it in English which the Maori people didn’t understand. So the Pakeha people had to translate the treaty. After the Pakeha people translated the treaty into Maori they all signed the treaty on 6th February 1840 and they also did a hongi.

William Hobson died on the 10th September 1842 in Auckland, New Zealand.

First day back at school...

Wow! It was great to see all the Pt England School kids back today. I loved catching up with the "old" Room 10 kids - thanks for dropping by for a chat. It was very exciting to welcome the new Class 13 and get settled into our learning. We were straight back into it, learning our new rotations, learning our passwords, finding out about statistics, and a having a few games along the way.

It's going to be a great year with a very strong focus on learning and achieving to the best of our abilities.

See you tomorrow!
